We promote family-based orphan care
We believe that children belong in families, not institutions or centers. Decades of research prove the best place for a child’s physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual development is in a family-based home.
- The Sunshine Homes Project creates families by pairing a widowed or vulnerable woman with 4 - 6 orphaned children.
- The children are raised by a Mozambican substitute mother (or zeladora), within a Mozambican community, in the Mozambican culture, according to Mozambican customs.
- The children remain in our care until they complete their education. We will then assist them in finding employment and set them off to an independent life as a contributing member of their society

Creating homes
We provide a holistic approach to address the well-being of orphans, widows, and vulnerable members of the community. With our unique family-based approach to orphan care, our Sunshine Home Project creates supportive family environments where they receive care, education, and other resources, allowing them to thrive and break the cycle of poverty.
- We have eight houses located in the Matola Santos community.
- Each house provides a home for a family consisting of a substitute mother and 4-6 children.
- Each mother is given an amount that covers the family’s monthly expenses (food, water, electric, etc.)
- The mother is also given a subsidy for her own personal use. She is not an employee, but a beneficiary of our foundation.
Creating families
We currently have eight families living in our 8 homes with each family is limited to 6 children.
Providing everyday support and guidance to each family, we look after each family member’s spiritual, physical, and emotional needs. We strive to ensure that every one of our children do not think of themselves as an orphan but as a child in a normal family.
Each year during the children’s school holiday in August, we take any children who have living extended family members for a visit with their family.

Our Homes

Our families
- We currently have eight families.
- We limit the number of children in a family to six.
- We walk alongside our families every day giving guidance and support.
- We provide for each family member’s spiritual, physical, and emotional needs.
- We strive to ensure that every one of our children do not think of themselves as an orphan but as a child in a normal family.
Our Children
Our houses are homes for children who have been orphaned or abandoned. Our children come from very desperate situations. They have suffered in ways that children should never have to experience. When we bring them home and provide them with the love, stability, safety, and security they deserve, they are able to leave their past behind and become children again.
Education
- Each of our children have educational sponsors who cover their tuition to attend private school.
- Only 1% of the children who start grade 1 in Mozambique will graduate from grade 12. So far, we have graduated our first two seniors who are now enrolled in university. We are committed to ensuring that all of our children will achieve their highest educational potential.
- We have a learning center where the children receive tutoring as well as a variety of lessons (instrumental, dance, art, sports) to make them well rounded.
Our Mothers
Each of our mothers have been widowed or abandoned by their husbands. They raised their own children and were left in very hopeless and impoverished circumstances. Our mothers now have a new life filled with purpose and dignity.
Our Community Projects
- While our Sunshine children are off at school, our mothers voluntarily operate a project for the neediest of the needy children in the community.
- These projects are a safe place where the children come to learn, play, dance, sing, and learn about God.
- We call this project “Beacons of Light” because that is what they are to the surrounding community children and their families.
Our Needs
We are a 501c3 non-profit organization. Therefore, all donations are tax deductible.
- We are seeking organizations (businesses, churches, etc.) to partner with us in providing for the monthly expenses of our homes. The amount for each house depends on the number of people living in the home, but the current average per house is $366.
- We need sponsors for our Beacons of Light Community Projects. The monthly operating expense is $80, which is only $7 per child.
- Donations to our general operating budget are very appreciated. With eight families in our care, there is always a need for medical attention, house maintenance, clothing, birthday presents, etc. We also have the salaries of our two staff members each month.
