VILLAGE OF QUIRINDI

PAMOJA TUNAWEZA!

Together we can!

‘Pamoja Tunaweza’ is a phrase in Kiswahili that means ‘Together We Can’. This is the affirmation made by the collective voices of the host communities and Mozambique LNG Project stakeholders. It is a convening forum with the purpose of promoting open, transparent communication addressing expectations, making decisions, and monitoring the progress of all the projects responding to the needs identified by the local communities.

Under the umbrella of ‘Pamoja Tunaweza,’ the Mozambique LNG Project, operated by TotalEnergies, has consolidated the voices of local communities, and public and private stakeholders locally and nationally to improve the performance of the existing projects while exploring future initiatives.

THE SUNSHINE PROJECT

The Village of Quirindi

Mozambique was, in the past, the world leader in cashew exports. The Mozambique LNG wants to build on that legacy again. With our local stakeholders, we agreed that investing in the cashew value chain in Palma could be a viable source of income and a great contributor to the local, provincial, and country economies.

In February 2022, Mozambique LNG partnered with The Sunshine Approach Foundation to pilot their Sunshine Project. Through the Tunaweza Foundation they adopted the village of Quirindi. The foundation is partnering with the Sunshine Villages Project to bring lasting transformation to the village of Quirindi through the innovative supply chain for Mozambican cashew processing.

The Tunaweza Foundation is piloting the direct line of the village community to the retailer. The sales of these cashews through TotalEnergies “Shops” will go to provide continued transformation to the village of Quirindi.

This project has already created around 150 job opportunities for the community.

Families

The average household in the village of Quirindi is five people. By empowering these 130 families, the Tunaweza Foundation, in partnership with the Sunshine Villages Project, is benefiting approximately 630–650 people in the village.

260 hectares
Of Land

For a family to be an entrepreneur, it is extremely important that they maintain complete control of their land. The 240 hectares are divided into 2-hectare parcels, which are in the name of the family. The families have the rights to the land, allowing the project to benefit them for generations to come.

Each family will receive 476 polyclonal cashew saplings to be planted in their 2-hectare parcel. These cashew saplings will produce approximately 10 kg of the highest-grade cashew nuts each year. Based off of the current market, each kg of cashews is sold for 43 Mozambican Meticais. This means the Village farmers are increasing their incomes by 144 times ($33 per year to $4752).

Water Wells

Water is the life of blood of any agriculture project. These wells aid the farmers in irrigating their cashew saplings as well as their intercrops they plant alongside the cashew saplings. These water wells are potable water that can also aide families with clean drinking water in their homes.

Along with the 476 saplings and intercrops, a family also receives tools needed for their farms. Families receive watering cans and garden hoes. The associations receive wheelbarrows, organic fertilizers and pesticides and sprayers to assist each family in properly caring for their saplings and intercrops.

The project strives to encompass the entire cycle from beginning to market. Recognizing that the cashew saplings will take three years to produce, the project provides intercrops to assist the families during the time of waiting for the first harvest.

Action plan

The United Nations have a chart in which they provide certain quantities of food for families in need. A family of 5 on average would receive approximately 15 kilos of protein per month. Our intention is to provide a family with enough seeds that would provide food for their family as well as enough to plant in the coming years. Factors such as insects and other concerns that could hinder production are taken into consideration in the quantities provided.
